- Abstract
-
The article presents a documentary biographical sketch of hieromonk Nikita (Marchenko) – a Russian Orthodox missionary who served in Alaska during 1880-s. His personality has been neglected in historiography yet it provides a vivid example of a humble ascetic's life which had started in professional military service and then after taking monastic vows became fully devoted to conversion of Alaska natives into Eastern Orthodox faith. Father Nikita's tragic fate reflects everyday life of a distant Aleutian and Alaskan diocese of the Russian Orthodox Church with all its challenges and achievements: hardships and joys of missionary work in the cold and severe land inhabited by alien tribes, a way of life and mentality of a Russian monk in this harsh environment, the inner world of daily existence and human relations inside this diocese with its strict rules and requirements. Also shown is a grim role that Russian diplomats and the Holy Synod bureaucracy played in the hieromonk's life. The article is based on the documents from Russian State Historical Archive, Archive of the Foreign Policy of the Russian Empire and most importantly – the little known sources from the Archive of Russian Church in Alaska (Library of Congress Manuscript Division). Getting to know the reality of hieromonk Nikita's life provides a new human dimension to the history of Russian Orthodox Mission in America and contributes to a better understanding of its significance.
