"Censorship" attack on M. P. Pogodin and his journal in 1842: disputes around the article of A. S. Khomyakov and the "Slavic question"

Abstract

This article is devoted to the study of the influence of the relationship between government agents on the censorship policy of Russia during the reign of Nicholas I. The reign of Nicholas I was marked by increasing state control over society and strict censorship. Many studies have been devoted to the censorship policy of Russia during this period. However, most of them study the relationship between Western-oriented magazines and censorship. This work studies the conflict between the government and the magazine of the famous historian M. P. Pogodin "Moskvityanin", which took place at the beginning of its existence. "Moskvityanin" was a conservative magazine and supported the government. The initiator of its creation was the Minister of Public Education S. S. Uvarov. Despite the fact that the censorship bodies were subordinate to the Ministry of Public Education, in 1841–1842 "Moskvityanin" faced attacks from various censorship agencies. Based on the data of sources and scientific literature, we come to the conclusion that A. H. Benckendorf and S. G. Stroganov, opponents of S. S. Uvarov, are behind these attacks. Wanting to weaken the influence of the Minister of Public Education at court and in society, Benckendorf and Stroganov are trying to close Moskvityanin and annoy its publisher M. P. Pogodin. As a result of the study, it is concluded that during the reign of Nicholas I, the censorship fate of the media was influenced not only by its ideological direction, but also by the relations between high-ranking officials, who in those years stood behind most of the literary magazines in Russia.
