- Abstract
-
The article examines the literary and aesthetic views of Prince Ivan Mikhailovich Dolgorukov (1764–1823), a prominent Russian poet of the late 18th – first quarter of the 19th century, and his position in the Russian literary process. The literary and aesthetic views of this writer have not yet been the subject of close attention by researchers, although mutually exclusive opinions have been expressed in literary scholarship, according to which he was declared either a classicist, a sentimentalist, or a romantic. The article analyzes Dolgorukov's own statements contained in both his lyrical and prose works, including unpublished ones, in which the writer expresses his attitude to the artistic systems that existed in his time. At the center of the article is the study of the nature of the influence exerted on Dolgorukov by the famous book of the founder of English sentimentalism, Edward Young, The Complaint, or Night Thoughts on Life, Death, and Immortality (1742–1745). In addition, the article analyzes a number of memoir and epistolary materials that define the writer's place in the literary process of the turn of the 18th–19th centuries. As a result of the conducted research, a well‑grounded conclusion is drawn that Dolgorukov, being a representative of late Russian classicism, undoubtedly experienced the influence of Western and Russian sentimentalist literature. Thus, it can be confidently stated that the literary position of Prince I. M. Dolgorukov may be described as eclectic, fully corresponding to the transitional era in which this writer, valued by A. S. Pushkin, V. G. Belinsky, and other outstanding representatives of Russian literature, lived and worked.
